Treating sewage with algae a win for Burdekin farmers and community

Burdekin Shire’s new money-saving wastewater treatment plant uses macroalgae and sunlight to purify sewage.

After cleaning the wastewater and absorbing nitrogen and phosphorus, the nutrient-rich algae can then be used as farm fertiliser.

What’s next?

Biotech company Pacific Bio says other reef councils in Queensland are also interested in the technology.
